Reputation and Performance

On US News rankings, patients gave their hospital experience 2 out of 5 stars. [1] It is also 13% less likely than the national average to be definitely recommended by patients to friends and family. For example, compared to the national average of 66%, only 48% of patients said they received help as soon as they wanted it. [2]

On the other hand, St. Anthony Hospital scores high on health equity, treating patients with lower socioeconomic status and providing charity care.

Its Medicare overall rating is 3 out of 5, while its patient survey score is 2 out of 5.

Notable Legal Actions Against Saint Anthony Hospital

Saint Anthony Hospital has been the center of several lawsuits, including wrongful death, but not all legal processes are over. It has also been a victim of a data breach.

Negligence Claim for Surgery Procedure

On July 2, 2018, Hector Martinez Ruiz and Maria Martinez filed a complaint against the hospital for alleged negligence. They claim he suffered severe postoperative complications following a total arthroplasty procedure on his right knee on April 3, 2017.

Complications include pain, swelling, a lack of leg strength, fracture, deformation, and shortening of the right leg. Maria also alleges a loss of companionship and intimacy due to Hector’s condition.

They argue that the defendants ignored his pain complaints, failed to review his X-ray after the operation, and failed to stabilize the fracture with another surgical procedure. [3]

Failing to Assess Medical Condition Properly

On May 11, 2018, Miguel and Olga Pineda filed a complaint against the hospital for failing to assess his medical condition properly. Miguel Pineda had to have his right foot amputated after being told at first that he would only need to have one toe removed.

Chicago amputation injury lawyers claim this misdiagnosis has caused him to suffer pain and financial damages and caused Olga to lose her husband’s companionship and consortium. [4]

Failure to Diagnose and Treat

Antonio Arellano filed a complaint on behalf of the late Carlos Marcial on July 5, 2017. The complaint stated that the hospital failed to notice and treat Marcial’s broken vertebra, which caused him pain, paralysis, and permanent physical injuries. Chicago misdiagnosis lawyers also state that this negligence led to his death. [5]

Failure to Take Sufficient Measures to Prevent Injuries

On March 14, 2018, Sherry Kitchen filed a complaint on behalf of the late Sarah Roseberry. The claim states that the hospital failed to properly treat Roseberry when she came to the emergency department with chest pains. Ultimately, Roseberry suffered heart failure and passed away, which the plaintiff claims was the result of the hospital’s negligence. [6]

Inspection and Deficiency Reports at St. Anthony Hospital

According to Medicare’s report, Saint Anthony Hospital performs more poorly than the average U.S. hospital in the following measures:

  • 28% of patients received appropriate care for severe sepsis and/or septic shock (the national average is 61%)
  • 2% of patients had an advanced breast screening on the same day or within 45 days of their initial mammogram or digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) study (numbers between 5% and 12% are ideal)
  • Fewer patients discharged on one or more antipsychotic medications had body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol level screenings in the past year (57% vs. 79%)
  • Poorer scores regarding substance use treatment
  • Poorer scores on inpatient psychiatric care follow-up
  • Higher unplanned readmission rates to any hospital within 30 days of discharge from the inpatient psychiatric facility (29% vs. 19.6%) [7]

The Illinois Hospital Report Card shows patient safety and inpatient mortality are within average. [8]

Understanding Medical Negligence and Your Rights

Medical negligence occurs when healthcare providers, such as nurses or doctors, fail to treat patients according to expected standards of care, harming them. This neglect can aggravate existing conditions or cause new issues like infections or injuries.

There are several common types of medical negligence:

  • Surgical errors – These include operating on the wrong side of the body, the wrong patient, leaving instruments in the body, nerve damage, and anesthesia errors.
  • Medication mistakes – Medication errors include giving the wrong medication or dosage or failing to check for allergies, interactions, and contraindications.
  • Diagnostic errors – Doctors can sometimes miss or delay a diagnosis or misdiagnose a condition, which can lead to injury or death.
  • Improper care – Inadequate care, delaying or rushing treatment, and failing to inform the patient about the treatment and its consequences are all examples of inadequate care.

Patient rights protect you during your most vulnerable moments when you need dependable medical care.

If a hospital falls short, you don’t have to face it alone — a medical malpractice lawyer can help you. These attorneys are skilled at handling complex medical cases, gathering strong evidence, and working with experts to pinpoint where the healthcare provider may have gone wrong.

They can also take on insurance companies, helping you recover costs for medical bills, rehabilitation, lost income, and even pain and suffering.
